The Recce Mission events are designed to promote and inspire confidence, assertiveness and leadership. Overcoming physical challenges builds confidence and assertiveness.  Dealing with uncertainty builds capacity. Combining physical extremes with uncertainty builds character. 

To complete the 220 km | 4000 m MTB Mission or the 100 km | 3000 m Trail Mission within the cut-off time, mountain bikers or trail runners need to –

  • Complete the physically and mentally tough Recce Mission within the allowable time
  • Pass through all Check Points (called CPs) and Observation Points (OPs) along the routes 
  • MTB riders or Trail Runners who do not make any of the time cut-offs along the route have failed the mission. These MTB riders and Trail Runners can continue as Jammies, or they will be extracted and Returned-to-Unit (RTU).

The Recce Mission events will challenge you physically and mentally.

The Recce Mission routes are unmarked and participants must be self-sufficient and do their own navigation by making use of the GPX route files for each event, or 1:50000 topographic maps in electronic format.   

THE RECCE LEGACY

Born in a time when the Special Forces were named Reconnaissance Regiments the term RECCE soon became synonymous with the operators that distinguished themselves by excelling in adverse conditions. The legacy lives on with the Recce Mision.

Mission mountain bikers will cover 220 km on tar, district, railway service, forest and farm roads, as well as Jeep track and single track. The total elevation gain is in excess of 4000 meters with the highest point at 2332 meters ASL.

Mission trail runners will cover 100 km on farm, river, mountain, cattle, forest and Jeep tracks, most of it single track. Runners will pass through 4 gorges with roughly

75% of the route next to the Crocodile, Lunsklip and other rivers that tumble down the Eastern Escarpment.

Mission: Trail Run - 100 km | MTB - 220 km

Entries include:

  • Hydration and nutritional advise and support by PVM before, during and after the Mission event

  • Hydration and food supplies at Forts and Forward Operating Bases

  • Routes with electronic maps and GPX files, i.e. expect a self-navigation expedition style adventure with a farm and other gates along the routes

  • Technical support for mountain bikes at Fort Mission

  • Signature Recce Mission T-shirt and goody bag at Registration

  • Crate delivery at one Temporary Base on the Trail Mission route; MTB Mission passes through Fort Mission at halfway mark

  • Warm meal The Old Transvaal Inn when finishing at Fort Mission
